port 53 udp is blocked... anyone know how to get around it?

Switching to Ebox because that's a pretty good price for a gigabit of fttp. So much bandwidth. My home DNS server (bind9) works fine when I route everything through a VPN, but not otherwise. Presumably it's because incoming port 53 is blocked. Tech support could not even confirm that it is, but it definitely looks like it to me. I can make the server listen on 553 instead, no problem, but that doesn't seem to work either. It complains that it can't get the key for the root zone, or something. Does it need some other config besides telling it what port to listen on for this to work? Anyone happen to know the magic trick required? Or how to get Ebox to unblock it? Edit: Okay never mind, I'm just stupid.
